The impact of large-scale parking capacity reductions on bicycle and public transportation demand

This thesis represents the final project that completed Adri Hooijer’s Master’s degree in Civil Engineering at TU Delft, within the Traffic & Transport Engineering track. Responding to the historical prioritization of automobiles in urban planning, this research investigates the city-wide impacts of removing parking spaces in Rotterdam. The aim is to explore whether large-scale parking reduction strategies effectively shift demand towards cycling and public transport, ultimately assessing the readiness and capacity of these alternative transportation networks to accommodate increased usage. This study seeks to guide urban densification and sustainable mobility initiatives by offering insights into the redistribution of transport demand and potential network constraints within densely populated urban areas. the redistribution of transport demand and potential network constraints within densely populated urban areas.
