Modelling changing travel behaviour in response to road capacity reductions

This thesis marks the completion of Sander van Heyningen’s Master’s degree in Civil Engineering at TU Delft, specifically within the Traffic and Transportation track. Motivated by the impact of high car usage on urban liveability, this research explores the concept of “disappearing traffic” following reductions in road network capacity. The study develops a model to predict travel behaviour changes and the resulting traffic dynamics during peak hours, evaluating car use, public transport, cycling, and non-travel alternatives. By providing policymakers with accurate predictive tools, this thesis aims to support urban strategies focused on enhancing sustainability and improving overall quality of life in densely populated areas.
